Conversations
Guile and Microsoft Teams
Conversations in the standard channels of your teams, read-only.
What Guile reads from Microsoft Teams
Guile reads conversations in the standard channels of teams you belong to. It doesn't read private or shared channels, and it doesn't read meeting transcripts yet. Microsoft's sign-in screen says Guile could also send messages and change chats. Guile never does: it only reads.
How to connect Microsoft Teams
- In Guile, open Apps and choose Microsoft Teams.
- Click Connect. A secure window from Pipedream (the service Guile uses to connect apps) opens.
- Sign in with your Microsoft 365 work account.
- Read Microsoft's Permissions requested screen. It shows Pipedream's name, and it asks to send messages, create channels and change chats as well as read. Guile never does any of that: it only reads.
- Click Accept.
- Back in Guile, under Manage, choose the channels Guile should learn from, or all of them.
If you see Need admin approval: reading channel conversations needs your Microsoft 365 admin to approve Guile once for everyone. If the screen says Approval required, type a short reason and click Request approval. If not, send this page to your admin. Connect again once they approve.
For your Microsoft 365 admin (a Global Administrator or Cloud Application Administrator):
- Follow steps 1 to 3 above with your admin account.
- On Permissions requested, tick Consent on behalf of your organization.
- Click Accept. Everyone at your company can now connect.
- To approve a request someone sent instead, open the Microsoft Entra admin center and go to Entra ID > Enterprise apps > Admin consent requests > My Pending, select the Pipedream app, then Review permissions and consent > Accept.
If something doesn't work
- Need admin approval even after your admin approved: they may have clicked Accept without ticking Consent on behalf of your organization, which approves only their own account. Ask them to do it again with the box ticked.
- A channel is missing: Guile reads standard channels in teams the person who connected has joined. Private and shared channels are skipped.
- New messages aren't there yet: Microsoft lets Guile check each channel once a day, so they appear within a day.
- You signed in with a personal Microsoft account (Outlook.com or Hotmail): connect again with your work account.
