Guile and Gmail

Recent received and sent email threads, read-only in Guile.

What Guile reads from Gmail

Guile reads the last 30 days of your received and sent mail, then checks every night for new mail and for labels added since. It never opens attachments, spam, trash or drafts. Google's screen says the app can also send email, manage drafts and labels, and change your settings and filters. Guile never does: it only reads.

How to connect Gmail

  1. In Guile, open Apps > Add an app and choose Connect on Gmail. To keep it to yourself, open Settings > Apps instead.
  2. In the Pipedream window (the service Guile uses to connect apps), continue to Google and choose your account.
  3. Google's screen names Pipedream, not Guile; that is expected. Leave every permission ticked and choose Continue.
  4. Back in Guile, the mailbox starts learning from the last 30 days of received and sent mail, with newsletters and automated mail left out.
  5. To narrow it, choose Choose sources and pick a Gmail label. To keep automated mail, turn on Include newsletters and automated email.

If something doesn't work

  • Google says your administrator blocks the app: a Google Workspace admin opens Security > Access and data control > API controls > Manage App Access and sets the app to Trusted.
  • You unticked a permission on Google's screen: choose Disconnect in Guile, then connect again and leave every box ticked.
  • A message is missing: Guile reads the last 30 days only, skips newsletters and automated mail unless you include them, and reads only the label you chose.
